The Museum of Applied Arts was founded on November 6, 1950 and belongs to the category of artistic museums of a specialized type. The main activity of the Museum is to systematically collect, protect, preserve, study, exhibit and publish objects of applied art. In addition to the work of national applied art, the Museum collects similar material from other European and non-European countries, which through cultural and economic connections has reached our region.

In the first year of its existence, the Museum of Applied Arts bought an extraordinarily valuable collection of various artwork, which was collected over the thirty years by the painter and graphic artist Ljuba Ivanović. The collection contained more than 3,000 items, among them the goldsmith's products, old manuscripts and printed books, carvings in wood, roses and mother-of-pearl, woodcarving and painted icons, and others. The earliest objects owned by the Museum date back from the 4th century BC and belong to the Numismatic collection (the money of Old Greece) in the Department of Metal and Jewelry, while collections in the Department of Contemporary Art include the most contemporary art production. On the whole, museum collections follow the development of applied arts in the span of 2400 years. The museum has more than 32,000 artefacts, among which there are works of exceptional artistic and cultural significance.

The museum has a very lively exhibition activity, as well as its own publishing activity. Traditional museum manifestations are the Salon of Architecture, Children's Applied Arts Museum, Modern Applied Arts Salon and Triennial Ceramics. Every sixth of November, on the day of the founding of the Museum, a studio exhibition is being organized, showing the previously unexplored area of applied arts with the Serbs.
